On July 20 at 2:30 we will discuss both Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain and James by Percival Everett.
Huckleberry Finn, a free-spirited boy with a love for adventure, escapes his troubled home life by faking his death and setting off down the Mississippi River. Along the way, he joins forces with Jim, a runaway slave, and the two form an unlikely but deep bond as they navigate the river’s challenges and the prejudices of society. Named among the great American novels, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been known internationally since its first printing in 1884 and remains popular yet controversial to this day.
This year’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, James is a revisiting of Huck Finn. It follows the same basic story, but offers an opportunity for Jim to have his story told. Brimming with the electrifying humor and lacerating observations that have made Everett a literary icon, this brilliant and tender novel radically illuminates Jim’s agency, intelligence, and compassion as never before.
Save the date: On August 17 we will discuss The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters.
